Fall 2016 Happenings

 Please note that school offices will be closed for mandatory training for faculty and staff from 8 AM to 12 noon 
on Monday, August 22 through Wednesday, August 24

The First Day of School is Monday, August 29, 2016

On Monday, August 29, the first day of school, students should be at school by 7:45 a.m. and report directly to the gym for an Opening Day Assembly. Classes for GMTCC students will also begin on Monday, August 29.  Buses will depart from Hazen for GMTCC following the first day assembly.

Student First Day Packets:  Every student will receive a packet of information on the first containing vital information for parents and guardians.  Parents are asked to remind their student to bring home this important information promptly.  

Attention Middle School Students and Parents!   A day time field trip to Hosmer Point is scheduled in early September for all 7th and 8th grade students again this year.   Details will be announced during the first week of school.  

Annual Student Information / Medical Information Update  It is absolutely essential that the school has access to the most current information for our students, especially in an emergency situation or should your child become ill or injured at school.  Please update and sign the form your child brings home in the first day packet and return it to the Guidance Office by September 12, 2016

 School Meals - the Right Fuel for Wildcats ! One of the keys to academic success for students is good nutrition.  Hazen Union School will continue to serve healthy breakfasts and lunches for our students.  Students can expect an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables every day.  Every family should complete the Reduced and Free Lunch Application included in the first day packet and return it to the Guidance Office as soon as possible.  Students who received reduced price lunch last year will be carried forward for a few days, however, parents must complete a new application each year.  Applications are processed promptly and all information on the application is kept confidential. 

Students not receiving reduced price lunch can purchase lunch daily or maintain a lunch account that operates on a debit basis.  That is, parents will make a deposit into the account and the student will charge meals against that balance.  Students will be alerted when the balance is near zero.  Regular meal prices are Breakfast - $1.75; Lunch - $3.00; Milk - $.30.  Parents with questions about the school lunch program should contact Patti Foster at (802) 472-2123.  The meal charge policy is also available on the web page.

Please never hesitate to call the school whenever you have a question or concern – 472-6511.  The Hazen reception desk is staffed daily from 7:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. In the event of a school closing or other emergency, parents will be notified using the Alert Now automated system.  Please be sure to update your telephone contact information.

Parent Portal:  Parents and students can access information on grades, assignments and attendance records. To access the Parent Portal for the first time, obtain your access id and password from Ms. Marquis in the Guidance Office at 472- 2196 or bmarquis@ossu.org.  Once you have the access codes, go to: http//ps.ossu.org/public/ and click on the blue "Create Account" button.  Be sure to use the parent access id and password you have obtained from the Guidance Office under the "Link Students to Account" screen.

Student & Parent Handbook:   Each Hazen student will be receive a copy of our Student & Parent Handbook on the first day of school.  Parents and students should review the handbook to learn about Hazen expectations, policies, and procedures and return the signature page to the school. 

Sports Physical and Athletic Authorization:  All student athletes must provide proof of a current physical examination (within 2 years) and an Athletic Authorization Form prior to participating in practices or games.  Parents can access the forms from our web site.  Parents can also access the weekly practice and game schedule on the web site.


Important Fall Happenings to Note on your Calendar


 Labor Day Holiday – School will be closed on Friday, September 2, and on Monday, September 5, 2016 in observance of Labor Day.

School Picture Day – Smile! School picture day will be on Wednesday, September 7, 2016All students will have a photo taken for the Hazen Yearbook and Student ID even if they don’t purchase a packet. Lifetouch School Portraits will provide the service and order packets will be included in the first day packet.  The date for picture re-take day will be announced.

Sophomore Class Meeting with Josten’s RepStudents in grade 10 will meet with the Josten’s representative and get class ring order packets on Tuesday, September 13 during TSA.  Our Josten's Rep, Matt Clark, will return to Hazen on Wednesday, September 21, to collect orders from students.  

Fall Open HouseCome out and meet our faculty and staff at the annual Open House on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Senior Class Meeting with Josten’s Rep:  Members of the Senior Class will meet with the Josten’s representative on Thursday, October 27, during TSA to discuss ordering caps and gowns and graduation announcements.  Seniors will receive their ordering information packet at this meeting.

October Teacher Professional DaysStudents will be dismissed early (11:35 am) on Wednesday, October 19, and school will be closed for students on Thursday, October 20, and Friday, October 21, to allow teachers to participate in professional development training.

Fall Parent Teacher ConferencesFall Parent Teacher conferences will be held on Friday, November 11, 2016.  School will be closed for students on this day. 

November Recess – School will be closed Wednesday, November 23 through Friday, November 25, 2016.

December Teacher Professional DayStudents will be dismissed early (11:35 am) on Friday, December 9, 2016 to allow teachers to participate in professional development training.

December RecessSchool will be closed from Monday, December 26, 2016 through Monday, January 2, 2016 for the December Recess.  School will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.
